The wolf and the seven little goats is a fairy tale about a mother goat who’s going away in order to search for food. She warns her children not to open the door for the big bad wolf, who they can recognize by his rough voice and his black paws. The wolf knocks at the door, but the goats don’t let him in. He makes his voice soft and his paws white and eats six of the seven little goats. The 7th goat tells his mother about it. At the end, the children are freed, stones are put into his stomach and the wolf drowns. This is the tale of the Wolf and the Seven Little Goats.

Background:

Writer: The wolf and the seven little goats is a very old story. It has been told from generation to generation before it was even written down. The Brothers Grimm were one of the first ones to write it down in their book, which was a collection of fairy tales. The Wolf and the Seven Little Goats was tale number 4.

Environment: The environment doesn’t really have a great influence on the average way that The Wolf and The Seven Little Goats is told. It may have a bit of an influence in the way it’s told from generation to generation. In every single country, this fairytale has been told just a little different in almost every family. The General Fairy Tale is the way in which it’s told to most people, therefore it’s a combination of what’s told to everyone and with some families, it may indeed have an influence on The Wolf And The Seven Goats.

Culture: With culture, it’s exactly the same thing. On the Internet you’ll find a mix of how it’s told. An average way of telling the story of The Wolf And The Seven Little Goats. Still, it may be told differently in different cultures. In some cultures it may be told in a frightening way to make their children aware of the dangers, and in some cultures it might just be a nice story before you go to bed.

 Lesson:

Norms/values: The wolf represents a murderer, a thief or a pedofile. The stones may be a trial and the drowning of the wolf is the punishment. A trial makes you be punished if you’re guilty, and the stones make the wolf drown/ catch fire.

Lesson: The lesson is that you should never let any stranger into your house  when you parents are gone. Especially when your parents say so. Another lesson that is linked to this is that you should always listen to your parents. Last but not least, you’ll be punished if you are a criminal, so never become one.

Comparisson:

England, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Greece: It's all the same.

Russia: In Russia, there are two versions. One of them is exactly the same as the Dutch version, but the other one is different. First, the wolf goes to the blacksmith and forces him to give him a new melodious throat. Second, the end is different. The goat and the wolf met the next morning, and the goat invited the wolf to compete in jumping over a fire. The goat jumped and so did the wolf, but the stones pulled the wolf down and caught fire.
